Mage
Chain your elements — chill them, freeze them, then drop a meteor on the ice for a shatter.
What WoW arena should have been, with everything rotten stripped out. Make a champion, queue, and fight. That's the whole game.
Every week another video asks what happened to the game you loved.
We stopped asking, and built the answer.
No raids to gear up in. No dailies, no world quests standing between you and a match. The lobby is a campfire and a vendor — then you fight.
Zero stat items in the game. Nobody ever loses because the other guy farmed more. Power comes from your class, your level, and the talents you pick.
No lockboxes. No battle pass. The only currency is Gloam Marks, earned by winning and spent on hats and auras that do nothing but look good.
Nobody sits in queue waiting for a support to show up. Queues are fast and fights are decisive.
This is the one nobody else will say out loud. Your matches are not scheduled to keep you playing. There is no hidden dial handing you a win when you look like you might log off, and no losing streak engineered to make the next win feel earned. It is plain Elo, the formula is printed below, and the game shows you the arithmetic after every single match.
Not opinions — these are the exact complaints people have made about arena PvP for twenty years, and what Gloamvale does instead. Every one of them is already in the build you can download.
Matchmaking is a trade secret. Modern games tune it for engagement — feeding you wins and losses on a schedule designed to keep you in the seat. You are not imagining the pattern; you are just not allowed to see it.
We published the formula. It is plain Elo and nothing else. No streak tracking, no "you are due a win", no dial that softens your match when you look like you might log off.
After every match the game shows you the arithmetic: "Rating 1000 → 1024 (+24). You were 50% to win against 1000." A game optimising for anything but skill could not show you that number — which is exactly why none of them do.
You lose to someone who farmed more than you. Gear, borrowed power, seasonal grinds — the fight was decided before it started.
There is no gear. Not "balanced gear" — none. There is not a single stat item in the game. Your power is your class, your level and your talent picks.
The world you fell in love with becomes a cash-shop fiesta — crossover mascots, bikini armour, $50 mounts. The tone is sold off one microtransaction at a time.
There is no cash shop. The game is free, and cosmetics come from one flat $5/mo sub — no lockboxes, no $50 mounts, no per-item pricing. Every cosmetic is earned with Gloam by playing, and every one fits the hollow-moon world. Moody dark fantasy, full stop — nothing to buy that breaks the tone, because there is no store to break it in.
You get stunned, feared, stunned again, and die without touching a key. "I got outplayed" and "I did not get to play" are different feelings.
Diminishing returns on every form of control. The second stun lasts half as long, the third a quarter, the fourth does not land at all. The game says DR 50% and IMMUNE on screen so both of you know exactly where you stand.
You queue, and quietly get handed a bot dressed up as a person — so the game can feel busy and reward you on schedule.
You are never matched against a bot. Queue and you wait for a real person, however long that takes. Bots exist only as a practice dummy you pick on purpose — and practice earns no Gloam, no experience and no rating.
Queues die waiting for healers, and half the ladder is people refusing to play the role nobody enjoys.
Nobody heals. Support exists — the Bard makes your team hit harder and theirs hit softer — but nothing in the game undoes damage. Fights end. Queues move.
You cannot compete without add-ons. The information you need to react is not in the game — someone had to build it for you.
Everything you need is on the screen and in your ears. Attacks paint the ground before they land, and spells crackle audibly while they charge — you can hear a fireball being cast behind a pillar. No mod will ever tell you something the game hid.
Two players circle a pillar for ninety seconds because breaking line of sight is stronger than fighting.
Cover is destructible. Keep throwing spells at the pillar and it cracks, leans, and collapses on whoever is crouched behind it. Hiding is a delay, not a strategy.
The ladder punishes you for queueing. People sit at a rating they are afraid to lose instead of playing the game.
Your highest rank is permanent. Reach Diamond and you are Diamond — the rewards it unlocks stay unlocked, whatever happens next. A loss costs rating, never progress.
A class is broken in March and fixed in September, if you are lucky.
Every matchup is simulated automatically. The whole class-versus-class matrix runs in minutes, and the server updates with one command. A complaint that lands in the morning can be patched the same evening.
None of this is a roadmap. Every item above is in the build on this page — go and check.
I have spent twenty years in ranked ladders. Masters in StarCraft II, where a loss is yours and nobody else's. Duelist in World of Warcraft arena on nearly every class, which means I have played both sides of every matchup people argue about.
I love fast PvP — the ten seconds where you read someone, commit, and find out. That part of these games has always been perfect.
What I hate is everything built around it. The grind before you are allowed to compete. The gear that decides the fight in advance. The season that resets your progress so you will do it again. Queueing for twenty minutes because nobody wants to heal.
Gloamvale is the ten seconds, with all of that cut away. Every decision on this page comes from being on the receiving end of the alternative for two decades.
That is also why the matchmaking is published rather than hidden. Anyone who has climbed a real ladder knows the difference between losing to a better player and losing to a system — and knows which one makes you quit.
The whole competitive game is free — all seven classes, every arena, ranked, the ladder, all of it. There is no paywall on anything that touches a fight, and there never will be. If it affects who wins, it is free.
The only thing $5 a month unlocks is the cosmetic vault: earn Gloam by winning, and spend it on auras, weapon glows, spell skins and titles. One flat price for all of them — and it exists precisely so there is no cash shop. No lockboxes, no battle pass, no $50 mounts, no per-item pricing built to bleed you. Cosmetics only, all earned by playing. The sub keeps the servers on; it never sells power, and it never sells your tone away.
Free while it's in Alpha — the cosmetic sub arrives at launch.
Each one wants a completely different fight. Learn one, then learn what beats it.
Chain your elements — chill them, freeze them, then drop a meteor on the ice for a shatter.
Charge in, stack Sunder to shred armour, and execute early before they ever settle.
Rot them slowly with plagues — and if you fall, sacrifice yourself so five frenzied skeletons win it posthumously.
Never stand still. Traps, poison, and an ultimate that fires arrows straight through walls.
A support with no heals at all — your team just hits harder and theirs hits softer. Alone, the songs fold back and he duels.
Rifle and turrets. Command every turret to focus one target or detonate them all — then climb into a war machine.
Giggling boxes that make you run, clones, blinding powder, and an egg you respawn out of when something kills you.
Attacks paint on the ground before they land. What you see is exactly where the shot goes — no hidden hitboxes, no surprises.
You can hear a fireball crackling in someone's hand before it launches. Listen, and you can beat it.
Hiding behind a pillar works — until it doesn't. Keep hitting it and it cracks, buckles and collapses on whoever is crouched behind it.
An orb sits in the centre. Taking it roots you in the open — greed always has a price.

Ambient dark: owls, distant howls, whispers from the graveyard, and a chapel bell that rings itself.
Climb from 1 to 20 and unlock a fresh tool at each rung — your kit grows the way you play it.
Pick your talents in the match, reacting to the enemy in front of you rather than a build you locked in yesterday.
Ranks track how you actually perform. Streaks are their own reward — string wins together and the arena notices.
Cannot be bought at any price. The only way to wear it is a five-win streak — earned, never sold.
Grab the ~259 MB zip. No installer, no account.
Extract it anywhere you like. That's the whole install.
Launch the game. The server address is already filled in for you.
Make your champion and press ENTER THE GLOAM.
The download already points at the live server, so normally you never type anything. If the box is empty, or you want to point a copy somewhere else, use this address:
Windows may ask to allow the game through the firewall the first time — say yes, or it will not be able to reach the server.
The server runs around the clock, so there is always somewhere to be. Everyone lands at the same campfire — nobody is dragged into a fight for standing near you. When you want one, press M to join the queue, and the round starts once someone else does the same.
You will never be matched against a bot. Queue and you wait for a real person. Bots exist only as a practice dummy you choose on purpose — and practice bouts earn no Marks, no experience and no streak.
